A Story by Carol Gilman
One afternoon in the summer garden, a breeze began to swirl and blow everything and everyone all around. Swooped-up from the ground, a leaf floated higher and higher until a cute little bird who was resting on a flower named Baby Betty caught the leaf in her beak. Feeling happy and excited, off Baby Betty went to show everyone her new wonderful found leaf. “Lovely,” commented Beatrice the Bee. “Beautiful,” said Chirpie. “Magical,” said Scout. Then off flew Baby Betty with her new found leaf to a flower to rest. There on a petal she placed the leaf, and then herself, to take a little nap.
Swaying back and forth the breezes rocked Baby Betty to sleep and swept the leaf into the air. When Baby Betty woke-up her leaf wasn’t there anymore. “I’ve lost my leaf,” she told everyone. So around and around everyone flew to look for the leaf. Under and over, and here and there, everyone looked, but couldn’t find the leaf. “Baby Betty, we can’t find your leaf,” everyone told Baby Betty. She thanked them for looking, and said that she had a feeling that it will show-up.
So back to what they were doing before, chirping, flying, resting, and being silly, everyone returned, except for Scout. The little hummingbird was set on finding little Baby Betty’s leaf. So Scout hovered here and there and everywhere, looking and searching in the garden for the leaf. And just when she too, just about gave-up, there sitting on another leaf on the ground, was Baby Betty’s leaf. “Scout found Baby Betty’s leaf,” everyone exclaimed. And so quickly, before the breeze swooped the leaf into the air, Scout scooped-up the leaf in her beak and flew over to give it back to Baby Betty. “Thank you Scout,” Baby Betty said. “I knew it would show-up, and thanks to you it did!”
And so one afternoon in the summer garden, a peacefulness calmed everything and everyone, and there rested Baby Betty with her new found leaf.
